I photograph to face the world. I engage the same inexhaustible protocol, traversing and being traversed by experiences whose common denominator is excess.
Confronting the inherent contradictions to the use of documentary photography, I document what I live and live the situations I document. I structure a physical and psychic path overshadowed by risk, hazard, desire and unconsciousness in a frantic search for the feeling of being alive, being part of life, belonging to life. To give a transcription of my position in the social and physical order, to escape organic and political passivity, I invent a scenario that I condemned myself to live out, to the letter and in the flesh.

The book SELF-PORTRAITS – 1987-2017 by Antoine d’Agata reveals a journey of the man-photographer from the origins of his practice to the present day, and presents to us the monumental iconography of a body of work that has been developing slowly from a visual diary begun in Mexico in the 80s to the moving image and the writings of a few premeditated life scripts. In what way is it possible to understand this living archive, this artistic, human and political gesture, this assumed, conscience and deliberate deviation, the last device for resistance in a world lived with rage and pain?

In the course of his travels in Mexico over the last thirty years, Antoine d’Agata has extracted the hair-raising material from which he now constructs this tense, immobile diary. The empty and devastated landscape that surrounds him is the reflection of an ever more unstable criminal milieu. Snapshots, cinematic sequences, and texts combine to form a personal diary which, through intimate sexual encounters and experiences with drugs, confronts and dialogues with an increasingly abominable reality. In order to portray the world of solitude and marginality through which he has passed, the photographer employs a language that in itself seems gradually to degenerate and lose all signs of humanity.
The book as a whole constitutes a complex portrait of the prolonged descent of Mexican society into blind savagery. Structured internally around six photographic movements that correspond to different moments in Mexico’s contemporary destiny, the chapters mark ruptures in the continuity of a story linking a person with a community that is not his own, but to which he feels irremediably united: a work in the polymorphic tradition of twentieth-century photographers who traveled in Mexico, such as Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
