Martin Sastre, Miss Tacuarembo, 2010
Film, Musical comedy
Duration: 92 mn.
A young girl called Natalia dreams of becoming a musical sensation, even though her chances at succeeding are remarkably slim, as she lives in poverty in the small, bigoted town of Tacuarembó in a forgotten corner of Uruguay. Her escape to Buenos Aires ends in the local «Jesus Park», where all her illusions are on the brink of being shattered. But for once, dreams appear to be stronger than reality.
A stunning firework of quirky and original ideas, this ironical musical based on the eponymous novel of Uruguayan author Dani Umpi denounces the cheesy and manipulative character of television shows, while fearlessly playing with clichés and violating the limits of various genres. The dancing Jesus and Natalia Oreiro in her double role of heroine and her rival are simply unforgettable.
