Marie Quéau documents the extreme states of the body and consciousness, those zones of tension where the human being confronts fear, danger, and pain, in order to probe the extent of her own condition.

Marie Quéau was born in 1985 in Choisy-le-Roi. After studying visual arts, she joined the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, from which she graduated in 2009. Since 2017, she has lived and worked in Paris, following a residency at the Cité internationale des arts.
Her practice interrogates the boundary between documentary and fiction: attentive to the descriptive dimension of her subjects, she consistently shifts away from it to reveal zones of ambiguity and disturbance, drawing on both collective imagination and science fiction.
Her projects have led to several publications: Handbook (September Books, 2018) is a poetic cartography of sites dedicated to scientific research; Odds and ends (Area Books, 2021) explores the end as a process at work within our surroundings; and Le Royaume (Aera Books, 2025) portrays an imaginary community.
Her works are included in collections such as the Frac Île-de-France, the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP), and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Her practice has been shown in numerous institutions and festivals, including the Centre Photographique d’Île-de-France, the Festival international de mode et de photographie de Hyères, the Centre culturel de Freiburg, La Filature in Mulhouse, and the Festival Photo Levallois. She is the recipient of the Prix Jeune Création Le Bal / ADAGP for her project FURY, presented at Le BAL in Paris in 2025.
