Kourtney Roy Canada, b. 1981

I prefer to employ this sort of nihilism in my work because the world is a bloody mystery; incomprehensible and obscure.

— Kourtney Roy

In her images, Kourtney Roy blends fiction and autofiction. Alone both in front of and behind the camera, she becomes the central figure in a true inner theatre, assuming multiple, highly characterized roles—sometimes absurd or grotesque, yet always meticulously composed. Her body, deliberately placed within natural or urban settings, lends itself to constant metamorphosis, to a thousand and one disguised and fabricated lives.

Kourtney Roy is a Canadian photographer and filmmaker born in 1981 in Northern Ontario. She grew up in Canada and now lives in Paris, where she has been based for nearly twenty years. Her work lies at the intersection of photography, fiction, and performance, establishing a singular practice of staged self-portraiture.
