Giovanni Leonardo Bassan is a multidisciplinary artist, born in 1989 in Marostica (Vicenza). His artistic training began at the A. Martini Art School in Schio and continued at the Politecnico di Milano, where he earned a degree in industrial design in 2011. He currently lives and works in Paris.
As a contemporary artist exploring the disappearance of the boundary between “high” and “low” culture, Bassan brings a distinctly European voice, steeped in the sensibility of classical and historical painting, to the expressionism of the new figurative painting. He seeks to develop his “abstract” vision by layering multiple figurative levels.
An observer of everyday life, Bassan’s painting offers a journey through Parisian heterotopias—places of “elsewhere” that exist beyond conventions and norms. Within the complex atmosphere of the city’s alternative festive scene—a rapidly shifting landscape—the artist assumes the roles of voyeur, portraitist, and participant. Incomplete images, almost cut out from historical paintings, appear before us, juxtaposed, often half-broken, tilting toward the edge.
Today, his artistic practice spans disciplines ranging from painting to sculpture, including ceramics and furniture design. Bassan aims to provide fresh, valuable perspectives by exploring alternative techniques and applying traditional forms to contemporary shapes. With a sensitive and unreserved approach, full of emotion, his works invite us to reflect.
