Born in 1969 on Réunion Island, Thierry Fontaine is a French photographer and sculptor.
His work explores the mixing of populations and the symbols carried through their movements and migrations. Since the mid-1990s, he has chosen to present his sculptural practice exclusively through photography, positioning it at the intersection of object, gesture, and action.
Drawing on unlikely encounters and the social dynamics he observes in the places he visits, Fontaine carefully stages meticulously composed scenes featuring figures, natural materials, everyday objects, and specially fabricated sculptures. Faceless portraits, still lifes overtaken by living elements, inexplicable phenomena, and uncanny assemblages combine to create syncretic images that function as condensations of stories and beliefs, evoking an anthropological imagination.
From these juxtapositions emerges a dynamic and continually evolving vision of contemporary cultural hybridity, offering a distinctive and reflective perspective on the complexity of Édouard Glissant's concept of the Tout-Monde.
