From 29 May to 13 September 2026, the Armenian Museum of America presents Father, a deeply personal and autobiographical exhibition by Diana Markosian. The exhibition explores themes of absence, memory, and reconciliation, reflecting on how decisions shape who we become.
The exhibition offers an intimate exploration of family, memory, and identity. At the age of seven, Markosian emigrated to the United States with her mother and brother, leaving her father behind. Fifteen years later, she returned to Armenia in search of him—searching for a man who had become a stranger. Father retraces this emotional journey to rediscover and rebuild a lost relationship through photography, archival materials, video, and text.
Through this multidisciplinary body of work, the artist examines displacement, loss, and belonging, creating a poignant narrative that resonates across generations and diasporic experiences.
“As she juxtaposes her own journey with her father’s parallel and invisible quest, Markosian reveals how identity is shaped as much by loss and distance as by presence and reunion. Father offers a powerful reflection on the complexities of family and the ongoing search for connection, inviting audiences to reflect on their own stories and relationships.”
