For this new edition of Untitled Miami, Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire is delighted to present a duo exhibition featuring two renowned female artists: Katinka Lampe and Kate MccGwire.
Katinka Lampe, a Dutch artist born in 1963, is internationally recognized for her figurative and expressionist paintings, which explore themes such as identity, social relationships, gender, and color. Although realistic, her works are not mere portraits, as the personal characteristics of her models are deliberately muted. She assigns them roles by incorporating elements such as false eyelashes or jewelry, creating a contrast between the social connotations of these objects and the youthful innocence of her models. This interplay of oppositions imbues her work with a unique tension, blending modernity with art historical references.
Kate MccGwire, born in 1964, draws inspiration from her childhood memories of the British landscape, characterized by its wetlands, winding waterways, and aquatic wildlife. These elements form the foundation of her practice, which focuses on the cycles, patterns, and dualities of nature.
Using feathers as her primary medium, she undertakes a meticulous process of collecting, sorting, and cleaning to create powerful, undulating forms that evoke both classical sculpture and mythical creatures. Her intriguing structures explore dualities: aesthetically captivating yet unsettling; formally blending the organic and abstract; and dynamically appearing fluid while remaining static. Through her work, MccGwire elevates feathers, often overlooked or discarded, transforming them into enigmatic anatomies that investigate both physical and introspective spaces.
Both artists share an artistic approach in which materials and concepts transcend their initial appearances to delve into profound dualities: identity and aesthetic tension in Lampe's work, and nature and organic contrasts in MccGwire's. Together, they create works imbued with compelling modernity and deep reflection on the human condition.
