Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire presents the first solo exhibition by French photographer Julie Joubert, on the first floor of its historic space at 17 rue des Filles du Calvaire. Patria Nostra is the result of three years of immersion within the French Foreign Legion. With this series, she won the Public Choice Award for the Fondation Louis Roederer Discovery Award at the 57th edition of the Rencontres d’Arles.
Through a body of photographs made across several of the Legion’s facilities, Julie Joubert documents the journey of young recruits, from their selection through to their integration into operational regiments. Beyond the military institution itself, her work explores notions of uprooting, belonging, and the reconstruction of the self, revealing the individual trajectories that emerge behind the imposed uniformity of the body.
This project was produced as part of the national photographic commission Regards du Grand Paris, initiated by Ateliers Médicis and the Centre national des arts plastiques.
Julie Joubert’s series Patria Nostra will also be the subject of a publication by Loose Joints Publishing.
