L'Artsenal, Dreux, France
Born in 1980 in Paris.
He lives ans works in Saint-Ouen.
He is a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, and has been a resident of the Villa Médicis 2018-2019.
Parties in watercolours, protests in charcoals, erotic webcam drawings, oil paintings of urban solitude, he approaches the most diverse and contemporary subjects in a classical manner.
“Thomas Lévy-Lasne celebrates the fact that there is something rather than nothing. Without being ostentatious, his work shows us that we can take the contemporary world by the arm and become part of art history. A painting such as Laetitia in Bed, showing a young naked woman lying down with a MacBook, is both an icon of our time and an unmistakable actualisation of Velázquez’s Venus in the Mirror. The subtle rendering of the skin and the folds of the Habitat duvet testifies to the painter’s commitment to the smallest detail. As an object of painting, a bottle of Diet Coke is no less worthy of our attention than an iPhone, tags on telephone booths, a transparent dress, plastic cups or a greedy kidney drop. To prove it to us, Lévy-Lasne imposes a very strict regime on herself: “To render everything with the same tenderness, to seek the right expression for each object.” Klaus Speidel (excerpt).
